History
Beacon Primary School was the first new primary school to be set up in 2007 as part of the FutureSchools@Singapore (FS@SG) programme. FS@SG was a collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Infocomm Development Authority to effectively harness the benefits of technology for engaged learning.
The name ‘Beacon’ was revealed to the public on 21 May 2007 in the official announcement of the FS@SG programme. The name was chosen to signify the school’s important role as a vanguard in charting new directions and providing possible models to engage students in learning by leveraging technology, thus preparing them for a complex, ever-changing global environment.
The conceptualisation and planning process for the school started in early December 2006. The school team worked with MOE HQ officers to develop programmes that would address the holistic development of students functioning in a future that would demand skills in diverse domains. With the aim of forging a new paradigm in engaged learning and leveraging technologies, Beacon’s learning framework emphasised a balanced and forward-looking curriculum that harnessed both existing and emerging technologies, and was supported by flexible learning spaces.
Construction of the school building began in July 2006. The school was designed and built based on MOE’s school-building norms, but the interior spaces and technology infrastructure were re-examined and conceptualised to support Beacon’s learning framework.
Beacon registered the first batch of students during the 2007 Primary One registration exercise. A total of 240 places in eight Primary One classes were offered and fully taken up. The school started operations in its new premises on 2 January 2008 with a staff strength of 23 education officers, eight support staff and a pioneer cohort of 240 students.
The official school opening ceremony was held on 23 July 2010.
